Asbestos removal across Greater Bendigo and Castlemaine

Bendigo

Central and inner Bendigo, including Quarry Hill, Flora Hill, Kennington, North Bendigo, East Bendigo, Long Gully, White Hills and Spring Gully. The inner streets mix goldfields-era brick and timber homes with post-war infill. In those older houses, the asbestos is usually in what was added later: a fibro kitchen or bathroom at the back, a sleep-out on the verandah, or a textured ceiling put up in the 1960s or 70s. Long Gully and Flora Hill have plenty of 1950s–60s fibro and weatherboard homes with asbestos eaves and wet areas.

Kangaroo Flat

Kangaroo Flat, Big Hill, Lockwood South and Maiden Gully, south-west of the city along the Calder Highway. Kangaroo Flat has a lot of post-war housing, and many of its original fibro and weatherboard houses are now being renovated or replaced, so bathroom strip-outs, eaves and pre-demolition jobs are common. Maiden Gully is mostly newer, but older farmhouses and sheds on its rural edges can still have asbestos roofs.

Strathfieldsaye

Strathfieldsaye, Junortoun, Emu Creek and Axedale, to the south-east. Much of Strathfieldsaye's housing is newer than 1990, so asbestos is less likely in the main house. It's more often found in older original homesteads, brick veneers from the 1970s and 80s, and outbuildings on the bigger blocks around Junortoun and Axedale.

Eaglehawk

Eaglehawk, California Gully, Sailors Gully, Jackass Flat and Ascot, in the north-west. Eaglehawk has its own goldfields history and a lot of modest post-war housing, so fibro fences, eaves and wet areas turn up often. It's also home to Eaglehawk Landfill on Upper California Gully Road, Greater Bendigo's drop-off point for small domestic loads of wrapped asbestos.

Golden Square

Golden Square, Golden Gully, Ironbark and West Bendigo, just south and west of the CBD. Old miners' cottages sit beside 1950s–70s fibro homes and later units. Fibro additions on cottages, and wet areas and eaves on post-war homes, are where asbestos is most likely.

Castlemaine
