Licences
| Licence | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Class A | Friable asbestos in any amount, and non-friable asbestos |
| Class B | Non-friable (bonded) asbestos over 10 m² |
| No licence | Non-friable asbestos of 10 m² or less, with no more than one hour of work in any seven days |
WorkSafe also issues restricted versions of each class. Licences last five years. You can ask any removalist for their licence class and number and check it with WorkSafe Victoria.
Notifying WorkSafe
Before licensed removal starts, the licence holder notifies WorkSafe:
- At least five days before friable work, or non-friable work over 10 m²
- At least 24 hours before licensed work on 10 m² or less of non-friable asbestos
- Within 24 hours of starting where the work comes from an unexpected situation, such as storm or fire damage
Air monitoring
Independent air monitoring is required for the whole of any Class A job, and at the end of it. Before a clearance certificate can be issued, airborne fibres must be below 0.01 fibres per millilitre.
Clearance certificates
After licensed removal, an independent person inspects the area and issues a clearance certificate before it's reoccupied. It isn't required for non-friable removal of 10 m² or less in total. On a home job, the licence holder you engage arranges it.
Workplaces
The person who manages or controls a workplace containing asbestos must keep an asbestos register, review it at least every five years, share it with workers and contractors, and give it to anyone doing demolition or refurbishment.
Disposal
Asbestos waste goes only to facilities licensed to accept it. Householders in Greater Bendigo can take small wrapped domestic loads to Eaglehawk Landfill. See asbestos disposal in Bendigo.
